Department of Shipping Technology

National Kaohsiung Marine University is located at the southern Taiwan island. Taiwan is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean so most of cargos and goods are mainly transported by ocean routes. Many Captains and Ship's officers of those giant shipping vessels were graduated from this School. There is a potential great growth in the worldwide shipping industry in view of the coming prosperous trading era. Many shipping companies in Taiwan possessbigger and better ships for operating the prime market of international shipping business.
Taiwan is also approaching to be the major marine transportation nation in the world. For the more promising future of marine transportation in Taiwan, the Department strives to meet the requirement in Cultivation marine professionals.Shipping Technology Sate Navigation and environment is the foundation of all marine transportation and development. The prime goal of the Department is to train professionals to safely transport personnel, Ships, and cargos to the destination ports.

Kaohsiung is one of the largest container port in the world. The Department is located exactly in the Kaohsiung port. Therefore, students are placed under the influence of a natural environment where they could have hands-on experiences with marine related resources.Concurrently, the Department provides students with hands-on experience on expensive Ship-handling Simulators, Anti-Collision Radar Simulators, Communication Simulators, Marine Instrument Classroom, Cartography Classroom, Electronic chart and Display Information system Classroom. University wharf and Boats, etc Highly qualified teaching faculty offer various professional courses such as coastal /Celestial Navigation, Cargo Plans and Practices, Marine Management and Control, International Marine Laws, Anti-Collision Radar Systems, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, Topical Studies, Marine Science, Naval Architecture, Electronics, Electricity, Compass and Applications, Marine Meteorology, Ocean Science, Cartography, Marine Engineering, Cargo Operations, Marine English, Marine Communication, etc.

EDUCATION GOALS


The primary Educational Goal is to cultivate outstanding ship captains and chief officers for commercial vessels.
This involves the training and development of talent in navigation technology, as well as personnel for managerial positions in shipping companies and related maritime enterprises.

The graduate program focuses on nurturing research and development talent in the field of navigation technology, encompassing maritime and operational areas. It also provides suitable channels for career advancement through in-service research and development. The curriculum of the department is certified by the Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK) and complies with the course planning of the International Maritime Organization's Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention.

 

Our Future 

Practice on board is most expected by students. They are able to put into practical experience on what they have studied. As a cadet on board, student travel with ship to different destinations. Through this, students learn the hardship of traveling on sea, and the diverse cultures of different nations.The teaching faculty is qualified with advanced degrees and rich practical experiences in their respective fields. Therefore, they are able to guide the students with professional knowledge and living philosophy, leading them to the path of success.

 


A brief history of the Department of Shipping Technology
  • 1948/10
    In October 1948, The Taiwan Province Department of Education approved the establishment of Kaohsiung Marine and Fishery Vocational School, including the Division of Shipping Navigation the predecessor of our Department.
  • 1949/10
    In October 1949, Penghu Marine and Fishery Vocational School amalgamated with Kaohsiung Marine and Fishery Vocational School.
  • 1959/07
    In July 1959, the students of vocational junior high school were graduated. In December, the school was renamed Taiwan Provincial Kaohsiung Advanced Marine and Fishery Vocational School.
  • 1967/08
    In August 1967, the school was upgraded from a vocational senior high school to junior college, and renamed Taiwan Provincial Kaohsiung College of Marine Technology. The Division of Shipping Navigation was the predecessor of Department of Shipping Technology.
  • 1969/07
    In July 1969, after all students in the senior high school courses graduated, the college became a full junior college of Marine Technology for all departments, including the Department of Shipping Navigation.
  • 1974/07
    In July 1974, the department was renamed the Department of Shipping Technology.
  • 1979/07/01
    On July 1, 1979, Kaohsiung city became a direct-controlled municipality under Executive Yuan. The jurisdiction of this school was changed from central government to Kaohsiung city and renamed Kaohsiung Municipal Marine Technology College.
  • 1982/07/01
    On July 1, 1982, the jurisdiction of this school was changed from Kaohsiung city to central government and renamed National Kaohsiung Marine Technology College.
  • 1997/07/01
    On July 1, 1997, the school was upgraded and became National Kaohsiung Institute of Marine Technology, with Department of Shipping Technology, Department of Ocean Engineering and Department of Hydrosphere Science, and their associated sub-departments at college levels.
  • 2002/08
    In August 2002, the Department of Shipping Technology and Department of Ocean Engineering were moved to the Qijin campus.
  • 2003/08
    In August 2003, the two-year vocational courses were terminated , and four-year technical study and two-year post-secondary study degree courses were introduced.
  • 2004
    In 2004,it was upgraded to " National Kaohsiung University of Ocean Science and Technology ".
  • 2006
    On February 1, 2006, the school was upgraded and renamed National Kaohsiung Marine University.
  • 2012
    In 2012, M.S. course of Shipping Technology was established.
  • 2013
    In 2013, Post-graduate program of Shipping Technology was established.
  • 2017
    In 2017, On the Job Training Program of Shipping Technology was established.
  • 2018/02
    The former National Kaohsiung Marine University merged with National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences and National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, and the school was renamed as "National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology."
